Will nothing stop this monster?
Ever since being accused of murdering a horse and a city worker, killer seaweed has been on the defensive in the Brittany region. (see earlier article here)
An "unprecedented cleaning effort" has, unfortunately failed to slow the onslaught.
Twenty-five thousand cubic meters of "sea lettuce" (laitue de mer) have been collected since the start of the season, but there is no end in sight.
In Douarnenez, the beach had to be temorarily closed due to a massive invasion. "2500 tons were collected," William Boulic, president of the local towns, told Le Figaro "but we can't keep up at this rate."
In response to the seaweed crisis, the French government plans to open three composting sites. Local officials, however, doubt that this will be enough.
Everything is being tried, it seems, except the one thing that will work--reducing intensive pig farming.
